ST. PAUL’S SCHOOL.

Mr A. J. Towsey,andthe ladies and gentlemen who took part in the concert held on Tuesday evening last, in aid of St. Paul’s School, must be complimented on the success of their entertainment. Several overtures and other instrumental selections were given by a well-trained band in excellent style. Miss Jago's song, “ The Forsaken,” was a treat in itself; but the item which pleased us most was the duet by two ladies, “ O’er hill, o’er dale.” This was given in a manner which could not fail to evoke the hearty appreciation of the audience. Miss Hayes sang “ Day and night I thought of thee,” very sweetly; and another young lady gave “ O Erin, my country !” with feeling and taste, although she appeared to he slightly nervous. Mr Lewis’s fine voice was heard to great advantage in “ The Mountebank,” and in response to an enthusiastic recall, he gave “ The lodging house cat,” a humorous composition. Mr Frazer sang “ There is a flower that bloometh,” with capital effect; and Mr John Eva was verv successful in his song of “ The Lugger.” The gentleman who sang “ Over the rolling sea ” had scarcely confidence enough, however he rendered it fairly. Mr Mendershausen sang a “ Serenade” very effectively. The Pianoforte Solo, by Miss Muir, was a rare musical treat, and the impromptu by another young lady fully deserved the applause with which it was greeted. We cannot help thinking that tho musical world lost a “ star ” when Mr G. Elliot Barton took to the profession of the law. His performance on the cornet and pianoforte at the one time was a genuine triumph of musical skill. The audience were not satisfied with one selection, so applauded loudly until Mr Barton re-appeared and favoured them with another. There was a large and fashionable audience present, and everyone seemed satisfied with the entertainment. At the conclusion of the concert Mr Hardy, on behalf of the School Committee, returned thanks to the ladies and gentlemen who had taken part in the affair.
