Edacation in Samoa.

Mr.J Caughiey, Director of Educatiou, New Zealand, spent the whole of last week in visiting the Educational institutions of Samoa. Edu cation in Fiji and Samoa is now supervised by NewZc* '

land, and In order to get a working knowledge of these places it was necessary that Mr. Caughley should visit them. Of the two weeks passed in Samoa, Mr. Caughley w as obliged to spent one in q Uar . antine, thus leaving him ()l , e week in which to do all tint was necessary. Monday last was spent I visiting a\\ Mission institutions, and these greatly pleased Mr. Caughley. Tuesday was set aside for the inspection of- Government schools.

Wednesday was a day of examinations for the Pro ficiency . Certificates. The morning, was spent at the Marist Bros' school, and the afternoon at Ifiifi. Both examinations were most suecessful. Thursday was spent at Vaipouli School, Savaii. Friday was left for an Education.- Conference in Apia, and Friday evening for a social function at Mali fa Government school.

On Saturday morning a native farewell took place at Malifa. A .kava ceremony aad taalolo were given in honour of the' director before his departure 7 at noon by the "Maota" for Pago Pago. The boys of.the school assembled at the Customs wharf to bid farewell. The director speut a busy week and apparenliy much enjoyied it. He was delighted with the work of education.,: Weaknesses as well as strong. T points were thoughtfully observed by him, and he, has left all interested in education in: Samoa pleased with the work already accomplished and pleased to aue■;:pt more on the lines sug&eskd by him.
