Ijrom the publishers, McCarron, Stewart & Co., Ld., the Samoa Times is in receipt of a copy of the newly-issued 1923 edition of "The Handbook of the Pacific," edited by Mr Percy S. Allen, the wellknown Sydney journalist. This year's edition has been completely revised, and it comprises some 600 octavo pages; also a comprehensive map of the South Pacjfic. Pride of place is given to Samoa ; information regarding this group spreads over pages 1 to 45, and includes up todate directories. An interesting note on Apia Observatory gives informative details regarding this most useful institution. The note runs:— There is also an Observatory; which was founded during the German occupation in 1902, by the Society of Sciences, oi Gottingen. It was originally established for a period of three yearns to obtain special observations to compare with those oi the British and German expedition to the South Pole in 1902-3. The results were found so useful and promising that the observatory was put oa a permanent basis. The main observations taken are (1) magnetic, (2) seismic, (3) meteorological, and (4) atmospheric. A large amount of data has been obtained in regard to the numerous earthquakes which have their origin in the Tongan deep, A tide-gauge is maintained in Apia Harboar, and several interesting tidal waves have bees observed in this connection.
