KAWAU ISLAND

SQUADBON WEEK-END

[Special to Times]

Even though there was no naval vessel in Mansion House Bay on Saturday last, the attendance of yachtsmen was the largest there has ever been. The weather was almost perfect for the occasion and the races went off well

Not the smallest part of the weekend was the dance in the Mansion House which was thrown open to the visitors through the courtesy of Mr and Mrs Reeves. The floor was crowded for every dance, a large variety of fashions in dress being displayed. Miss Clarke's music was much appreciated and everyone sang the choruses with gusto as they danced.

The Mayor of Auckland, Mr Ernest Davis, presented the prizes for the races. In the course of his remarks he congratulated the crews on their very fine display of seamanship. After the presentations had been made, dancing continued until the wee small hours," and the evening as a whole was one of those which will remain fresh in memory for a long time fco come. A number of Rodney residents attended, the number being perhaps not as large as usual owing to the damage done to small craft in Warkworth during the recent storm.

School at Kawau.

Although no definite information is to hand as to just when a school is to be inaugurated on the island, most of the residents are looking forward to seeing work started as soon as possible. In the opinion of most of them the fact that there are educational facilities there will help a great deal in increasing the number of settlers.

The new sandspit road is fast becoming popular and Kawau's isolation is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. It is to be hoped that in the future the residents of the island will establish strong bonds of friendship with settlers on the mainland, and treating themselves as part of the Rodney County, make Warkworth their centre. The excellent daily boat service run by Mr Daveney to the island is appreciated and is fast becoming most popular, the time taken on the journey from the Sandspit being only a l^-hour or so journey. "KAWAU ISLAhD KOOKABURRA" It is not generally known that a very attractive little magazine is compiled on Kawau Island. In the copy we have to hand, dated February 22, 1936, are to be found items of general interest, personal touches and articles. It is nothing if not intensely interesting from cover to cover. The several illustrations are good, and to the people on the Mainland it gives an insight into the affairs of a community which many people hardly know exist.
