THE ONE HE WANTED

Once upon a time an old gentleman wanted a maid-servant. He was a very particular old gentleman, and he said he would only have a girl who was a good servant.

He had plenty of money, and he was always ready to jnve some of it to those whom he liked, so there were many girls who wished very much to be his maid-servant. And as soon as the girls heard about the matter each of them hurried to the old gentleman's house to see him.

The first one who went was a girl who was dressed in very fine clothes, and when she walked up the garden path of the house where the old gentleman lived she kicked to one side a long brush which was laid on the path.

The old gentleman was watching through the window, and when she knocked at the door he went and said, "You'll not do. for me, miss. Goodmorning!" So the girl had to go away.

And though two other girls came the old gentleman said the same to them. "You will not do for me, good morn-

ing!"

At last a nice girl, with rosy cheeks, came walking up the garden path. She was poorly dressed, and she looked as if she was a farm'lassie. .

She shut the gate after her gently, and then, as she walked up the path, she saw the long brush which th© first girl had kicked aside. The country lassie picked up tha bru*>V and carried it up to the house.

Now, the old gfc t rcieman had been watching all the time, and he opened the door at once. And before the lassie could say a single word he said, "Come in, please! You are just the girl I want!"

i You see, the farm lassie was the only girl who had picked up the brush, and the old gentleman knew that she was a maid who would keep a house in order.
