AUTOMATIC LETTER STAMPER.
The Post Office is awakening to the possibilities of the penny-in-the-sk>t system, which has been in use in the outside world for so many articles, from chocolate to railway tickets. Already a penny-in-the-slot machine' for the sale of penny stamps has been installed at the General Post Office, London, for some time, and now an automatic machine is being tiried there which, on payment of a penny-in-the-slot, impresses letters with a "Postage Paid" stamp in red. Any letter bearing this impression will be treated as if it oore a postfege stamp of the value of id., provided it bears also an ordinary date stamp impression of the office of posting.
