The conference between the coalminers and owners terminated abruptly, the former rejecting the owners’ offer to abide absolutely by me decisions of a tribunal to be appointed by Mr Hughes. Meanwhile they are increasing the wages of all lower'paid men to 14s 6d. The miners sought £1 a day for all lower paid men, Stopwork meetings will be held on Wednesday, at which the Miners’ Executive will recommend the non-apceptance of the owners’ proposals. Melbourne, June 26
There has been no development of the strike situation, though a conference between the Trades Hall and the Chamber of Manfuaotures on the question of basic wage is expected materially to influence the position. It is estimated that 25,000 are now idle. The Broken Hill painters submitted claims to the employers demanding 24s a dayi The latter conceded the claim, but undertook the painting work themselves, the men being informed that they were not required.
