The sheep dog trials in the oval held the interest of a big crowd of shepherds and outside spectators throughout the day. There were a great number of entries in the Open. Trial and both the winning and the second dog put up a fine performance. The contest for premier honours was fought out between the well known breeders —Messrs C. Hay, of Masterton, and J. R. Corrigan, Hawera. The decision went to Mr Hay’s Tommy Atkins by the narrow margin of one point. Both dogs went to the head beautifully and brought their sheep to the circle well in line. Tommy Atkins had beautiful command over his sheep, as becomes a dog well under command. He did not knock his sheep about and did practically no unnecessary work. He finished his task in the pen with his sheep in good condition and well in hand. The second dog, Marvel, had some difficulty with his sheep at the bridge and it was here that he lost his point in turning on his head. The other placed dogs were Mr L. Manson’s (Takapau) Storm, third; Mr C. Hay’s (Masterton) Win. Wallace, fourth; and Mr J. MacDonald’s (Dannevirke) Mac, fifth. The greatest weakness in the trial was in driving, probably due to the fact that the dogs had been trained mostly on a straighlout bond and draw in the paddock. ' This was particularly noticeable among the placed dogs in Mr L. Manson’s Storm. Storm is a dog with a beautiful slyle and plenty of force and command, but his training made him hold his sheep too close, and driving was difficult. His master overcame ihe difficulty by taking one side in the drive and letting Storm look affer (he opposite side. With this somewhat unorthodox style they accomplished the (ask successfully, - Few of the com pelitors let the dog hold the sheep a! the peg near the pen, but drove right up to the pen and let the dog hold alongside while they opened the gale. The Maiden Trial was won by Mr L. Manson’s Storm, with Mr R. J. Currie’s (Bunnythorpe) Boss in second place. The judge was Mr .1. MoL. Blair, of Hawera.

The third day of the dairymen's carnival was dull, with intermittent showers, the wind veering to the east, adding a chilly touch. Heavy rain during the night had flooded several neighbouring - streams, which overflowed on to roads leading to town, but Show enthusiasts were not deterred b\ flood or mud, and the exhibition hails were again crowded. The sagacity of Die sheep dog allured many to the ring to watch the trials, while ibe-.-ine shows enjoyed a share of patronage. THE PRIZE LIST. POULTRY.
