SHIP IN DISTRESS.

Per Press Association

Wellington, Jane 24

Last night Captain Yeo, Naval Intelligence Officer at Wellington, received a call for help by a repeated wireless message from the new livemasted schooner Vigilant, 130 tons, bound from Gray’s Harbour, Washington, to Sydney The schooner reported that she was in heavy weather, and as her deck cargo was shifting she may need assistance. The Vigilant gave her position as 150 miles north west of Lord Howe Island, which lies to the north-west of Sydney, in longitude about twothirds of the distance along the course from Gape Maria van Diemen to Sydney. Captain Yeo promptly cabled the message from the Vigilant to the Sydney naval authorities. Probably, however, the message was already picked up by the New South Wales wireless stations

The Vigilant was first spoken to yestereve by a vessel which was about 200 miles north of her, and both vessels were moving away from each other. The Vigilant left Gray’s Harbour on the 11th April with a cargo of timber for Sydney. She is American owned.
