The conference of coal owners and the men's claim for payment : ot £1 per day for lower paid men and shorter working hours. The owners submitted counter pro* posals, but no agreement was reached. At the'suggestion of Mr Hughes, who presided, the conference adjourned with the object of, the two parties trying to reach a modus vivendi.
