TENNIS.

ENGLISH PLAYERS IN CHRISTCHURCH. Christchurch, March 19. At Lancaster Park tennis matches were played between A E Beamish and A H Lowe, two of the British Isles representatives in the recent Davis Cup contest, and local players. The weather was fine but threatening , a strong cold wind blew across the ground. Some very good tennis was witnessed. The New Zealand champion, beat Beamish, 6—4, 2—6, 6— 2, but Lowe outclassed A D Cox, B—3, 6—4, In the Doubles the visitors beat Olliver and G Aitken very comfortably, the .scores being 6—3, I—6, B—o, B—2, Olliver did not play nearly so well as in the singles, though Aitken played a good solid game. The visitors played with"fine understanding and at times their game was a treat to watch. Beamish played a hne all round game, while Lowe’s awkward service and brilliant driving proved him a very dangerous player. Both men volleyed well and played a superb game close to the net. To-morrow Olliver plays Lowe and P G Greenwood meets Beamish, the same players taking part in the doubles.
