Hundreds of children from the schools of the district and their parents held high carnival on Marton Park yesterday when they celebrated the first sports gathering under the auspices ot the Rangitikei School Sports Association. The weather was perfect, the Park in good order, and a strong willing committee got a lengthy programme off in good time. The outing was a most enjoyable one. Many of the competitors put up very creditable performances Mr R F Wood who held the watch registered some fast times, and the keen contests indicate that the athletic spirit is becoming as strong as over. A Orofton boy, A Wing, won the primary championship, but the other championships were won by Marton Brhce Henderson won the secondary championship and D Nightingale the girls primary The Championship Shield is attractively designed, and in presenting this to Marton School President J J McDonald pointed out that the origin of the movement was in a collection taken up by Messrs S Hunt and A Y Brown at the time of the Peace Celebrations. The money then collected "was not distributed, and the sum had been handed over to be Combined Schools Committee, which had decided to provide a champion school shield and hold annual sports open to all schools in the Wanganui Education district. Each school could join by paying an annnal subscription of ss. Eight joined the Association, and there was a promise of more. He congratulated Marton on being the first winner of the Shield, and hoped to see the names of many other schools in the district inscribed on it. He thanked all those willing workers who had toiled so hard to make the Sports so great a success, •and called for cheers for the ladies who had helped with the refreshments, also the teachers. The headmaster, Mr de Berry, received the Shield on behalf of the School, and on his call round after round of cheers were given for the many officials, and brought to close a happy and eventful day. The prizes won will he presented later on, and those won by pupils of other schools will be forwarded on as soon as possible. The provis’ou of afternoon tea, which was fnlly appreciated, and the light drink stall where big business was done, being delegated to the District High School Senior girls, as the Sports Association found it could not undertake the provision this year, the girls wore very ably assisted by Mosdames Gibbons, Gorrie, Gould, Hunter, Hutchins, Richardson ami Knigge, and the undertaking proved a financial success, A Rest tent was also much appreciated. Mr Hutchins, to whom the secretarial work was entrusted, had his details very complete. The initial gathering involved a great deal of work, and he is to be congratulated on the excellent manner in which he discharged his duties, making much for the success of the biggest day yet in school sports in the district.
