SOUTH AFRICA
RESULT OF THE ELECTIONS. United Press Association— By Elec trie Telegraph—Copyright. Received March 17* 2 p.m. Capetown, March 16. Mdch significance is attached to an article in “Onsland,” the Government organ, which states that the only logical consequence of the decision of the electors is that General Smuts should give Dr Hertzug the opportunity of taking the responsibility of the Governmentof the Union on his own shoulders, seeing that he has more followers than the leaders of any other single party. Then at least the political atmosphere will be cleared, with or without political thunderstorms. Mr Roos, chairman of the Transvaal Nationlist Party, in a manifesto, says independence is no tem-' porary matter or an election cry to be thrown aside, but something holy and precious which only traitors could renounce.
