SIR ROBERT STOUT’S GENEROSITY

Per Press Association. Dunedin, March 16 " A long list of donations has been received from time to time by Otago University. This was added to today, when Sir Robert Stoat wrote to the University stating that he had forwarded to the secretary and treasurer an assignment of £SOO worth of inscribed stock for the establishment of a scholarship in economics. In the course of a covering letter Sir Robert says:—‘‘l wish that this gift, with the gift the Government will give, should be set aside as for a scholarship or prize for the person who obtains the highest marks in first-class economics for a year in Otago University without distinction of sex or class or race or creed. I also think it would be wise to sot aside one-tenth of the income each year to be added to the capital sum, so that in future years if the interest falls thd amount will he kept up to at all events what it is at present. The accumulation, if continued for many years, may enable a second scholarship to be granted. In my opinion the study of economics should been encouraged. Itjs the one thing that is needed in New Zealand.”
