Owing presumably to a lighted caudle being left In a drive at No 6 level in the Grand Junction mine when the men knocked off on Saturday afternoon, a fire broke out, and although it took till daylight on Sunday to extinguish it, no material damage was done to the mine, The presence of monoxide gas rendered the task somewhat difficult * and dangerous, and seven or eight men were overcome and had to be medically attended to. Two miners— Bloomfield and Pennell —had to bo gonveyed, to their homes on stretchers. The mine “manager, W*« McOonachie, was also attacked and had rather'a bad time.
