Thomas Vernon, who pleaded guilty to a charge of riding a bicycle on the footpath was fined 5s and costs 7s at Marton Court. Fred Howard who did not appear was similarly charged and fined. At Marton Court Leonard T, Nuttall, charged with a breach of a maintenance order, was given one week to pay arrears. He pleaded that he had not intentionally got into arrears, but that ho had been out of work. * The Magistrate said there was plenty of work about for men who . wanted it. The London Times says shipping companies are combining to increase outward freights at least 50 per-cent. Some owners assert that they are considering laying up their ships owing to the fabulous cost of bunker coal, which is quoted at 155 s in London compared with 15s to 18s prewar. In the list of latest honours appears the name of Brigadier-General William Meldrum, C. M. G., D. S. 0., who receives the distinction of Commander of the Bath. General Meldrnm has already received the congratulations of Geaeral Sir W R Birdwood, who commanded the New Zealanders and Australians at Auzac, and the New Zealanders at Gallipoli. At Marton Court to-day, before Mr J. L. Stoat, S.M;, the police proceeded against Jeffery Johnston on charge of theft of a wallet containing £62 10s, the property of H. J. Moore. Sergt. Cahill conducted the case for the police, and outlined the facts, which alleged that on March 3rd Moore had lost a wallet which his brother had seen accused pick up. At first accused denied having found it, bat eventually admitted it. After hearing evidence at considerable length, accused, who had pleaded not guilty, was committed for trial at the Supreme Court at Wanganui. Bail was allowed in a surety of £IOO.
