AMUSEMENTS.

CHAUTAUQUA. The large number of people who attended the opening of the season of the above at Marfcon yesterday afternoon and evening must have highly appreciated the whole of the proceedings and realised that the fame of Chautauqua had been well earned. In the evening the lady Superintendent was introduced to the audience by Mr de. Berry in an effective speech, and she followed this with a pleasing and quaint address which set everyone at ease, and Ifnade them expectant of good things to come. They were not disappointed. The Lyric Quartette soon made the air vibrate with melody, their voices blending most harmoniously, and by the songs that lent themselves to comedy the audience were specially amused. The quartette were well worth listening to for far longer than thes' remained on the'stage. In referring’to an 'entertainment ouch as that given by the Chautauqua it is impossible to detail all the progra nme, and this also applies to the most excellent discourse on astronomical subjects given by Dr Carpenter. It was alike instructive and entertaining, and he supplied his hearers—even those who have given some study to astronomy—witi a far wider conception than the; previously possessed of the wonders and glories of the universe. His ei planations were clear, his wordwell chosen and forcible, and bis delivery all thit could be desired. He made a distinct impression, and established the fact that the science lie expounded deserves the most attentive study, and should form a subject in our educational work in the schools. The whole programme showed that Chautauqua, m coming to this district has conferred benefit on the people; and we have no doubt that this evening there will be another well filled tent.
