OROUA COUNTY COUNCIL

ITS MONTHLY MEETING. 4 The regular monthly meeting of Oron.a County Council was held in the Feildmg Chambers yesterday afternoon. Present Ors. H Burrell (chairman), Morrison, Pearce, Greenhow, McLennan and Vincent, Or. Greenhow, who is leaving,immediately on a visit to the Old Country, was grantee, six months’" leave of absence, and was wished bon voyage by hia fellow members. BUSINESS DONE. The following resolutions were carried: — Moved by Ors. Burrell and Morrison,TEhat the engineer be refunded the £sl being the additional cost of® running his motor car for the past year, and that in fufcnre the Council pay the actual upkeep of the car. Moved by Crs. Yinceutancl Greenhow, That both the Vainer-General and the district valuer he urgently requested to proceed at once with the valuation of tbe Raukawa Estate subdivisions, to enable the Council to proceed with the road. Also, that tbe engineer communicate with Mr Driffle, explaining the position, ROADS AND PATHS. Mr T H Verry waited upon the Oouncil and urged that attention be given to Lethbridge road, past Makino, between Pearce’s Hill and the Railway line. Something should be done before the winter sets in, otherwise thp road would be very had. There was no metal on it. He would be glad if Councillors would inspect the road. On the motion of Crs. Vincent and. Pearce, it was resolved that the engineer "dismantle the old bridge in Delaware road and replace same with a filling and pipes; also that the worst places on the Ashhnrst footpaths be re-gravelled, and necessary action be taken to ent back tbe hedges overhanging the footpaths. CORRESPONDENCE, The following correspondence was received and dealt with : From the Hon. the Prime Minister, acknowledging receipt of letters re appointment of Commission to deal with matters affecting the frozen meat position, and stating .that negotiations are now proceeding which it is hoped will have satisfactory results.—Received. From Kairanga County Council, asking Council to support resolution urging that patients at tbe public hospital be given the option of having the services of the medical attendant who had been in charge of their oases Jprior to admission.—Or. Vincent as a hospital trustee, mad e a report on what was being done in Palmerston. Councillors left it at that.

From the Mayor Feilding Borough Council, fixing March 19th as the date for conference to consider his suggestions for improved reading scheme. —Received.

From the Mayor, Feilding, for warding resolution in connection with scheme for scholarships for soldiers’ children.—Held over for further consideration.

From State Advances Department, stating Shat warrant for £IOOO for Onepuhi bridge loan had been remitted, —Received.

From M. Kew and others, asking Council to remove fences across Beetbam street, Halcombe. —Held over.

From A. T. Driffle, asking Council to have trees cut back at junction of Bankawa and Palmerston rbads.'— Engineer given power to act. From A. T. Driffle requesting that work of constructing Raukawa road be,proceeded with without delay.— Cause of delay to be explained.

From J. Nathan, assistant borough engineer, stating that he is retiring from the public service and extending his thanks for assistance rendered to him during his term of office.— Received. ENGINEER’S REPORT. Mangaone Riding—No work has been done in this Riding. Rangitawa Riding—Work in this riding has been confined to watertables and general maintenance. Ruamanga Riding—The contract for gravelling Wilson’s Line has been commenced and is proceeding satisfactorily, 300 yards having been delivered to date, A start was made at scarifying and rolling Kimbolton road, but it was found that certain repairs to the roller were necessary, and for that purpose it was sent to Palmerston North, but should be in commission again this week. Taonui Riding—Good progress is being made with the contract for gravelling Taonui road north, about 600 yards having been delivered. The roller should be ready to commence work on this road some time fhia tuoolr Hiwinui Riding—The Bunny-thorpe-Ashhurst road from Watershed road to the boundary of Taonui Riding has been * gravelled and one of the fillings widened- About 600 yards of gravel at a cost of 5s _lod per yard has been delivered on this road. The work of widening the worst of the fillings on Grove road has been commenced. As the bulk of this Work will be on the boundary road between the Kairanga and Oroua Counties, I have written the former with a view to obtaining assistance from them. Otangaki Riding—Work has been confined to trimming the recently gravelled roads, cleaning out drains and watertables, etc. TREASURER’S REPORT. Amount of general rates collected. £7672 16s 7d. Riding Accounts —Ranmanga, cr., £289 3s 6d; Mangaone, cr., £305 13s9d; Makino cr., £276 la 3d; Hiwinui, dr., £ll7 12s 6d; Taonui, dr., £472 0s 9d; Rangitawa, dr., £lB4 19s 8d; Otangaki, £133 9s od.
