The flag race in tne competitions at Bangiwahia*yesterday resulted in a good contest between Mr M Deroles and Mr W B Gibbons. The latter won. His twenty-one year old mount, Tommy , was well known to many Martonians some years ago.

The recent rains have been a great help to Ohakea Sports Olno in getting their grounds ready tor the on March 17th, and the committee have been successful in preparing for a big day. The liberal prizes in the horse events have brought lorth promises of competition from many of the moat prominent horsemen in the district. The beautiful cap presented by Mrs D G Riddiford, to which £lO has been added, will produce a big field in the Open Huntero. President Bailey has donated a five guinea cap to which £3 3s has been added, for the Open Pony Jump, and big prizes are given in the Maiden Hunters and Driving Competition. Athletic events are provided for boys and girls and others, and it should be noted that all events are post entry. The catering arrangements are in capable hands, and picnic parties may obtain hot water free. Music will be supplied bv Marton Municipal Brass Band.

Judging by the visits of several strangers, presumably officials of the Postal Department, and their being engaged in taking measurements around the building, it? would appear that the long desired improvements in connection with the Marton Post Office are in contemplation. What direction these improvements will take it is hard to say, but the time appears opportune for the Borough Council, Chamber of Commerce, Retailors’ Association, and all interested in the welfare of the town, to bestir themselves. What is wanted is a building worthy of a growing and prosperous place and it only remains tor a united front to be shown and something more in accord with onr wealth and resources will be forthcoming. If no interest is taken in the matter the Department will naturally conclude that Marton is satisfied with what is provided and continue on the even tenor of its way, with an addition here and there, and the building, which should be one of the most important looking in the fflaee, will still retain its insignificance.

After refreshments most of tho day was spent in the briny, where the children had a really good time, being qnite ready to return home at 4 p.m., arriving there at about 8.30 p.m., tired out, bat singing and cheering.
