ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
KILLED ON RAILWAY, Per Press Association. Wellington, March 8 As the train from Upper Hutt was entering Petone station at 8,40 this morning the driver noticed a man fall on the track in front of the engine, but before anything could be done to avert accident the engine passed over the man, who was ahockingly mutilated. Death was instantaneous. Documents found on the body show that deceased was Henry Henderson, a timber worker from Auckland district, who had resided at 66, Cook Street, Auckland, also at Mangakehi near Te Kuiti. He was a single man, 28 years of age, a native of Paisley, Scotland, and was with the Main body of the Expeditionary Force, wounded at •Gallipoli, and discharged in 1915. SOLDIER SETTLER’S DEATH. Dunedin, March 8 A soldier settler named James Smith was killed at Gladbrook, Middlemarph, on Saturday, through a hay torn entering ins back and penetrating his heart. Deceased, whose parents reside in North Otago district, was married only a few weeks ago. PEA RIFLE FATALITY. Dunedin, March 8 A lad named Davis, aged 15,„ shot himself fatally in the chest with a pea rifle at Earnclongh yesterday. He was handling the rifle when it exploded and the bullet lodged in one of his ribs.
