Edward Jacomb, an English barrister, several years resident at Vila, 'the author of “France and England in the New Hebrides,’’ en route to England, interviewed, said the natives are rapidlv dying out. The New Hebrides population had decreased bj' a third in the past eight .'years. The decrease generally is mainly attributed to tiie indentured labour system. There was but one way to save the natives from that was by limiting white immigration to one white to every thousand natives. The Japanese were flowing into the New Hebrides, and all were coming in under the French flag. The 'reason for this, he ;was of opinion, was that France 'would, after securing her own interests sell ;it to Japan. It was suggested that Britain, should buy France’s interests in the Pacific. Mr Jacomb concluded by urging that Australia should advance a the New* Hebrides as the key of the situation lies with Australia.
