The saving of nearly £5,000,000 a year (the sum now spent in drink) will be equivalent to almost £5 per head saving for every naan, woman and child. Reduction in taxation will follow, gaols will be closed, crime will decrease, the health of will bojimproved and prosperity will abound. This certainly is proving to be the case in the U. S. and cannot well bp otherwise, if as Lord Alverstone, Lord Chief Justice of England said ‘ ‘9O per cent of the crime in this country is dne to drink.” The Chief Justice of N. Z. has spoken on very similar lines, m regard to the Dominion. With Prohibition one gaol would be all that would bejnecessary.*
