MARION RETAILERS ASSOCIATION.

A fully representative meeting of the above Association was held last night, about 18 members being present. Mr Low (president) presided. The question of holidays was fully discussed, and it was unanimously decided to observe as a full holiday Saturday 27th Dec., thus giving four days running before resuming business.' The New Year holidays will be as in previous years viz the Ist and 2nd January. iVarious matters of interest to the town were discussed. The members were urged to personally back up Marton Chamber of Commerce by attending and taking an active interest in its proceedings. Several speakers drew attention to the unsatisfactory system (or want of system) in watering the streets. An improvement was very desirable. The President stated that a previous request tc the Borough Council brought the following reply : “Dear Sir.—Re Water 'Cart—With reference to your request that the water cart be placed on the streets earlier in the morning, I have to inform j’ou that if the shop-keepers would not sweep their rubbish into the gutters every morning, which is contrary to the by laws, the water cart would start mucli earlier. Our by-laws provide that no person shall sweep any rubbish, dirt, or other matter of a similar nature from any shop or other building on to any street. Will vou please inform your members that the practice must be stopped.—\ours faithfully, A. H. Knigge. ”

After a short discussion the following resolution was unanimously passed to be remitted to the Borough Council. —This meeting of Retailers strongly resenc the tone of the letter from the Town Clerk under date 25th October. The Marton Retailers do not desire his opinion or advice re ruboish. His statement that shopkeepers sweep their rubbish from their shops into the streets is untrue. Oar request was for the water cart to be on the streets earlier In the morning and such a reasonable request does not warrant the Town Clerk falsely charging the shopkeep* ers with breaches of Borough Bylaws. ’ :
