ARREST OF A STUDENT.

The police at Ithaca, New York, have arrested on a charge of mnrder in the first degree a young Cornell student, Donald W. Fether, following the disappearance of M’ss Hazel Grance, an 18 year old girl with whom Fether attended a dance at Ithaca on July Bth. HI During the evening the couple went Jout oh a nearby lake in a canoe. Some time later calls for assistance were heard and Fether was found swimming about in the lake minus his trousers. The up - turned canoe was floating some distance away. The young man’s story is that the canoe was accidentally upset. When he came to the surface the girl had disappeared. He swam about for 30 minutes trying to find her, without success. “A number of “men who had been dragging the lake pulled up Fether’s itrousers. .They were inside out and itied at the knees. The result of this : discovery was Father’s arrest. He says that he removed nis trousers in the water, a feat possible to expert swimmers. The searchers say tha t they believe that the trousers were tied to the girl’s body, as when they were pulling in the hooks the rope suddenly lightened as though a heavy weight had broken away.
