,W. O. Campbell, assistant manager of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, gave evidence of correspondence with the Marine Department regarding the daylight sailing regulations. Instructions were given to captains that the danger area must not be crossed in darkness even if this meant delaying the vessel’s voyage. Captain Williamson apparently sailed on a certain date contrary to the Company’s orders. Had he refused to sail his action would have been upheld and the branch officer who gave the order would have been called to account. not aware.that the captain of the Maua violated the daylight sailing regulations on several occasions.
