NAVY LEAGUE

LADIES' AUXILIARY MAETON BRANCH,

The October meeting was held at the Coronation. Hall on Thursday, (6th. Present; Mesdames Birch Ichair), Bill, Baylitte, F. C. Wilson, Hewitt and Miss Kensington. Apologies were received from Mrs Lethbridge and Mrs Fitzherbert. The secretary read correspondence from the Wellington secretary of Navy League Ladies’ Auxiliary, asking all members in this district who could to make children’s and baby clothes for sailors wives in England. This work would come under the auspices of the Women’s United Service League and w r as brought before us by Lady Jellicoe, who is deeply interested in this bianch of the work, especially as sailors—in particular Naval men — are not very well paid.

It was decided that this work should be gone on with and any member desiring to help can get the cut out; garments from the secretary. In August this branch offered prizes for Navy League Essays, and all schools in Marton were asked to compete. The results are as follows ;

OPEN ESSAY—Subject • “The Debt the World Owes to the British Navy.” Ist prize, £8 3s; 2nd £2 2s ; donated by this Branch : Dorothy Eliott, Nga Tawa, 1 Ralph Richardson, D.H. S. 2

Highly commended : Nancy Fannin, Nga Tawa ; Albert Goudopp, D.H. S.; Kathleen Strombom, St. Stephen’s.

SECOND ESSAY.—Subject: “The Work of the British Navy Daring the War.” Ist prize, £2 2s: 2nd, £1 Is; donated by Mrs B. P Lethbridge: Stella Loeber, D.H.S., 1
