' MARTON J. C. —RAN GITIKEI HUNT’S SPRING MEETING. The forthcoming Spring Meeting of the Marton Jockey Club and Kangitikei Hunt combined opens on Wednesdav and will be continued on Thursday.” Most ot the horses that have been accepted for have arrived, and the whole of the Club’s loose boxes (44) .have been engaged and should prove a great boon to horse-owners. As it was impossible to erect the accommodation house in time for this meeting about forty of those in charge of the horses have been accommodated in the Club’s buildings at the Racecourse, and the catering has been undertaken by Dustin’s Ltd. Unfortunately the rain yesterday will make the course holding, and speculators will have something to do to select the winners as the fields are on the large size, and being practically the first meeting of the season there is very little form to go on. The catering will be in charge of Dustin’s Ltd., and morning tea . will be obtainable on arrival at the course, hot luncheon after the first race, and afteruocn tea under the grandstand from 2.30 p.m. The newly formed Marton Municipal Brass Band lias been engaged, and a select programme of music wilj. he rendered. Racing starts at 11.30 with the Hack Hurdles, for which seventeen horses have accepted, and there is a probability of about fifteen facing Starter O’Connor. Papanui and Rio are a brace that will command a lot of attention, but Sweet Tipperary and the top-weight Yankee Jack, will probably start favourite. In the Bellevue Hack, the only five furlong race at the meeting, twenty appear on tiie card. It will be a difficult race for punters, but Egmont Park’s recent performance at Waverley should make the Sylvia Park gelding favourite. Empyrean is a New Zealand Cup candidate, and Its running will he watched with interest. Nursing Sister and Ruddy will he suited with the distance. I

Eleven have accepted for the View Halloa Steeplechase, and Stetson with 12.1 will probably be a nonstarter. Deeside, Onipbto and Argo arc a formidable trio and should carry the bulk of the public’s money. With thirteen in the Martou Handicap this should prove a good betting race. The state of the going will stop the top-weight, Volo, with 9.10, and of the bracketed double, All Over and Omaim, the latter may be the selected one, and will probably start favourite. Zola’s chance is well thought of in Wanganui, and The Speaker will have to be reckoned with. Rose Queen is favourite in some quarters, and with (>. T should make the pace a cracker. The Victory Steeplechase has the smallest field* of the day', but most of the horses have arrived. Gang Awa’ has enough weight, and the winner mav come from the lower division, of which Kurapai and Mattock appear to be the best. Master Webster can be relied upon to run a good race, and Sensitive may be better suited over a shorter course. In the Railway Handicap several horses claim engagements in other events, and of the probable starters Sweet Corn, Kipling and Ahi Ka read well.

There is a likelihood of twelve starters iu the Ladies’ Bracelet, as Kafour is not taking on the journey to Marton. [Silenus, Sail Home and Pa were were will probably carry most of the money Jon the machine. The largest held of the day is iu the Tutaenui Hack Welter, for which twentv-two have accepted, and if Sir Fanciful, May Morn and Utuvvai face the starter they can be depended upon to give a good account.
