Hastings, June 27. The weather was fine but very cold for the first day of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s winter meeting. There was a good attendance, and the course was in good order. The “tote” handled £31,595, against £14,989 for the first day of the 1917 meeting. Results:— Woodlands Hack Steeples.—l Peneton (G. Roach)l , 3 Sail Home 3. Also started: 4 Sir Donald, 2 Manawapanog, 5 Gwyune, 6 Negative, 7 Juan. /Only the placed horses finished. Won by the lentgh of the straight. Time, "4.33.

Whakatu Hack Hurdles.—l Kohu I (S. Henderson) 1, 4 Sensitive 2, 9 I Altercation Also started : 2 Anr- j ore, 7 Woodlark, 10 Wlieneakera, 5 j Reformation, 6 Metallnm, 3 Master j Boris, 8 Torps. Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase.—4 Polthogue (E. Copestake) 1, 6 Styrax 2. Also started: 3 Bon Reve, 1 Foeman, 2,Ormesby, 5 Vacuum. The race proved a chapter of accidents, all the horses falling. Bon Reeve was remounted by the rider of Foeman and won as he liked, but the rider failed to draw the weight, Polthogue, also remounted, was awarded the race, and Styrax, remounted, was second. Time, 7.20. Winter Hack Handicap.—s Doric, (0. Price) 1, 6 Utuwai2, 7Transmission 3. Also started: 3 Sacramento, 2 White Ranger, 1 Glucian, 9 Fiddlestrihgs, 4 Ben Bolt, 10 Maori Tikanga, 12 Pavilion, 11 Miramar, 8 Sea Foam, 13 Sansterre. Maori Tikanga won by half a length but his rider failed to draw the weight. The race was awarded to Doric. Time, 2 16. Ladies’ Bracelet —1 Omahu (Mr J.
