BOMBS IN THE MAIL.

AMERICAN OUTRAGES. PLOT AGAINST OFFICIAL. Vancouver, April 30. The New York postal inspectors have found 17 infernal machines in mails addressed to prominent officials, similar to those sent to Senator Hardwick and Maor Hanson, of Seattle. Two bomhs were discovered in San Francisco, addressed to the District Attorney, and to his assistant. The packages found in these and in other cities were marked with the novelty name “Gimbel Brothers’ Department Store, ” but the managers of that store denied any knowledge of the packages. Among those to whom the deadly packages were addressed were the Postmaster-General( Mr Burleson), the Secretary for Labour (Mr Wilson), the Attorney-General (Mr Palmer), the Commissioner-General of Immigration (Mr Oaminetti), Mayor Hylan, of New York, Governor Sproul, of Pennsylvania, Mr Rockefeller, and Mr Morgan, and the Solicitor-General (Mr Lamra). Evidently a wholesale attempt was made to kill the leaders in many cities. The authorities fear that some of the packages have not been discovered. The New York postal authorities have declared their belief that the mailing of bomba to prominent persona was intended as a Red demonstration in connection with May Day. The packages containing the bombs were mailed at 8 o’clock on Tuesday night, presumably at the main postoffices in 38rd Street. They were sealed, making them subject to firstclass postage for parcels. This_ led to their being held for insufficient postage. A post-office clerk having read of a bomb explosion at the home of Senator Hardwick, he notified his superiors that the packages were held up The bombs were in green boxes two inches wide and eight inches long, and were encased in wrapping paper and sealed with red wax. The addresses had been typewritten. “A message from Atlanta (Georgia) states that Senator Hardwick’s wife was burned, and a negro servant had his hand blown off, by an infernal machine, which was received in the mail this morning. The bomb was postmarked “New York,’’ and was manufactured from a toy container, sold at Gimbel Bros. ’ store in New York City. It was inscribed similarly to the bomb recently sent to Mayor Hanson at Seattle.
