GERMAN COLONIES IN PACIFIC.

MR HUGHES' OPINION. ARRANGEMENT HAS MANY POSSIBLITIES. Received Feb 11, 9 a.m. New York, Feb 7 In an interview, Mr Hughes was asked if Australia was satisfied with the mandatory plan governing former German colonies in the Pacific. Mr Hughes said that the arrangement can hardly be regarded as satisfactory as it is provisionally uncertain. He said: “lam unable to tell you the na«ure of the arrangement, but it may tie said it has many possibilities One of these wenld be reasonably satisfactory, although it would fall short of what Australia expected. The arrangement contains possibilities"Anstrali& would not entertain. "Australia wants the settlement she is entitled to, which would ensure national safety aud a guarantee of her industrial, social and racial policies. We prefer not to accept a mandatory principle, but if we must it is imperative that we be given the same power over new territories as we exercise over Australia.”
