PERSERYATION OP NATIVE BIRDS. (Per Press iuiaoeial&>a.T Ohrisichnrcb, Feb 7 At the Science Congress to-day Mr Edgar Steed gave an address on the preservation of native fanna, which he said was extremely im portent from a scientific point of view as well as from the standpoint The present Act, with its many amendments designed to preserve bird life, wa* practically useless as it stood at present. The New Zealand sanctnanes were the means of preserving certain species of bird life from extinction, hnt the speaker was not certain that all birds placed there would survive, owing to the competition. That did not alter the fact that most strenuous efforts should be made to give them a chance. The sanctnaries should he'made as perfect as possible, and the birds given every chance. The following resolution was carried: ' ‘That this meeting requests the lastitute to combine with the Acclimatisation Society to urgs on the Government the necessity for fresh legislation to preserve one native birds, and also to take measures to promote education en the subject in the State schools"
