Press Association. Wanganui, September 7. Eighteen hours continuous rain, succeeded by a heavy southerly gale, caused considerable disorganisation of railway service. Last night’s exAuckland was held up seven hours by a°slip at Greattord. The local train Palmerston to Wanganui did not arrrivo at Wanganui last night owing to slips at Wangaehu and Fordell. Passengers spent the night in the train, and came on in the mdrning in motors. The Wan-gamii-Hawera section was also' blocked gby slips. No trains left iown this morning. The gales and flood destroyed several hundred feet of the Freezing Co.’s jetty at Imlay repair work. The railwa bridge at Aiamoho is damaged. Our Mangaweka correspondent wires:—The heavy rain during winter was totally eclipsed by tbe fall last night. It was estimated to have been at least eight inches There are two enormous slips near Oliver’s and Murphy’s farms, Taihape road. The Ruahine toad is blocked, telephone and telegraphic communication with Taihape is interrupted, the lines being all down. The damage will probably be considerable including mortality amongst young lambs.
