MR GOMPERS ON THE WAR
A TONIC FOR LABOURGERMAN MILITARISM MUST GO Lonon, Sept. 5. Mr Gompers, adresaing the Trade Union Congress said: “America’s message to Britain and the Allies ia: We men of the Western democracy are coming five million strong.” Mr Gompers continued “I have not always agreed with the policy of British Governments, especially regarding the Boer War, and towards Ireland, hut I rejoice that the old Britain is not the Britain of to-day. You gave the Boers full s elf-government, now they are giving their 'lives fighting for the Mother Country. 1 would not prolong this war one minute longer than necessary, hut I am not willing to shorten it by one hour if that meant that the'military machine would remain to cause further wars.
