ALLIES’ PEACE TERMS.

MODIFICATION IMPOSSIBLE. £

London, Sept 20.

Ranter understands that the following is the view inß ritish well informed quarters regarding the attitude of the Allies towards recent general bnt often contradicted statements in the enemy press—particularly the German press—concerning Germany’s foreshadowed intentions to make “concessions” in Belgium and elsewhere. These have not passed unnoticed, but the Allied Government* have not failed to ap praise them at their true value, and to realise that at bottom they express the fact that Germany knows she cannot win the war - .

Itjis perfectly well understood that Germany is now seeking, in view of recent events on the north eastern front, to impress upon the German public that her military position is now that she can suggest, in some specious fashion, a plan of action that wonld satisfy the Pan-German and might also appeal to the pacifists of allied countries. It is therefore just as well that those in the Central Powers who are organising this socalled “peace” movement should realise that their machinations in no degree deceive the allies, wirose view and determination regarding the kind of peace they will accept have undergone and can undergo no modification whatever.

As far as the allies are concerned no end of the war is possible until the final disappearance of Prussian militarism. Only those x possessing Prussian mentality can regard without horror the double loss of life and treasure deliberately brought about by Germany in this war, and in this sense it is true that the allies would welcome peace, but enemy efforts to befog the real issue are as hopeless as they of German diplomacy/

Reuter’s correspondent at'Amsterdam states that Mr Wilson’s reply to the Papal Note is perturbing the authorities in Germany, who are continuing organised pro-Kaiser demonstrations. The Clogno Gazette admits that the Entente diplomats have . already partially jeopardised German national unity. A great part of the people is being infatuated with a constitution of another character.
