MASQUERADING AS A MAN.

MISS DOROTHY WARD'S ADVENTURE. Miss Dorothy Ward, the musical comedy actress, had an unpleasant adventure in London recently. “It all came about,” said Miss Ward, “through a bet. In my part of the new play I have to dress up as a boy, and the -company bet me that I ■would not go out in men’s clothes. Well, I did, I went out from the theatre dressed in tweeds, a straw hat, red Gilbert the Filbert hair. I walked down Shaftesbury Avenue to Coventry Street, and then I walked along the Strand, entered a restaurant, and spoke to Mr Courtneidge, who did not recognise me until I laughed, “Afterwards I went down the Strand with two friends. A woman heard me speak in my ordinary voi«e and went to two policemen. I saw I was followed, but did not run away. One of the policemen came up to me and said “You’re a woman, are’nt you?” and almost before I could speak they took me along to Bow Street with a merry crowd behind. “When I got to Bow Street I told them who I was and why I was dressed up. Afterwards I had a severe lecture, and was told I was liable to three months’ imprisonment. Well, 1 have won my bet.” “This Was the first time I have worn male clothes, ” she added, “and that was why the company dared me to go out. ” “I thoroughly enjoyed being a ‘knut, ’ she remarked, “and was very much amused at some of the comments of the constables at the station.”
