MARION JUNCTION ATHLETIC CLUB’S SPORTS.

A RECORD GATHERING.

OFFICIALS. Handicappeis Pedestrian: Messrs O. E, Gibbons and A. Way, Motor Cycling; Mr Q, Tortenson, Palmerston North. Judges: Messrs J Walker, H. M. Baker, E. Murphy, and R. Gordon. Referee: Mr O. E. Gibbons. Supervisor: Mr A. Way. Starter: Mr D. Henderson. Timekeeper: Mr R. F. Wood, Favoured with ideal weather, the Marton Junction Sports attracted a large attendance, the chief attraction being the motor cycle events. There was an average of twelve starters in ea-ch 'Of these races, and although the winners won fairly easy, the finishes between the placed men were always exciting. The 15 mile event was notable for its mishaps, eight competitors being unable to finish through their machines going yvrong. Mr G. Tortenson, Palmerston North, acted as handicapper for the cycle events, and Mr R. F. Wood as timekeeper fo? all events. Mr D. Henderson made a capable starter, and Messrs O. B. Gibbons and A. Way as handioappers of the pedestrians were responsible for some close finishes, especially in the Consolation, the field of seven finishing within a yard of.each other. S. Hartley, a young Marton runner, put up a good performance, whining the Maiden, 100 yards and 440 yards off the limits in fast times, and F. Nesdale’s first in the haltmile and second in the mile were also meritorious performances. L. Aiken won the mile handicap, cutting out the distance in 4mins47seoe. Mr H. O. Brewer made an elficient secretary, and had all details well in hand. The Marton Junction Baud played a number of musical selections. The general committee, Messrs R. Whale, L. Gronu, A. Whale, W. Conder, H. Baker W. Douglas, and R. Gordon, had the track in good order, and deserve credit for the manner in which they conducted the meeting, and they were ably assisted by Messrs J. N. Browne 150, R. J. Jones, 120, J. Dawber 31 and Q. H. Tomllne 230. Bruce’s machine skidded after he bad traversed about eight miles aud he came to grief, but was not seriously hurt. Tomlines’ machine went wrong when leading at the end of nine, miles. Oollinson’s handle bars shifted just as he started, and he took part in the race, and Jones' belt came off at the starting post With the exception of the placed men the competitors had a bad run. Morrison won fairly easy at the finish. Time, ISknins 6 3-5 secs.
