Dunedin reports the death of Judge D, U. R. Ward, aged 86. He will be interred at Christchurch. Patrick Wash man, a resident of Ashburton who had been on remand charged with drunkenness ever since April, died in Christchurch hospital this morning. The native Essini, otherwise Matipa who was brought to the Bluff by the Anglo-Norman from Malden Island, where he is alleged to have murdered another native, was brought before Mr Oruickshank, S M at Invrecargill, on Saturday on a charge, of being a prohibited immigrant. About a fortnight ago accused was before the Court in connection with the same charge, and he was then remanded as doubt was entertained as to whether the accused came within the definition of a prohibited immigrant, he being a native of the Cook Islands, a dependency of New Zealand, In the meantime Inspector Norwood obtained an opinion, and this was to the effect that'Eaiui came within the Prohibited Immigrant Act. The Magistrate said that as the man had been taken off the boat by the police the charge would hardly arise. Under the circumstances it would be better to place the accused on board the boat again, and if he came ashore he could be re-arrested, and remanded till Wednesday next.
