The second officer, Gobrecht, was standing on 'the bridge looking through a glass-covered fire alarm containing- thirty-three tubes connected with various parts of the ship.. He observed smoke in one tube and touched a button automatically, directing jets of steam into the burning rooms,,, and equipped himself and others with smoke helmets. He was overcome by fumes being wedged in a bunker the door of which automatically closed. The fire brigade reached Gobrecht and made desperate efforts to extricate him, bufi were forced to abandon the attempt.
