MESSRS DAVENPORT BROS/ NEW BUILDING.

The new two-storey building just - completed for Messrs Davenport - Bros.- is without doubt the most valuable addition to architectural ; designs in Marton. Erected on the. corner of Broadway and High Street > it forms an imposing frontage to both streets, and it has a solid and . unique appearance. From the en- V trance in High Street a broad stair- t case leads to tfhe upper storey where ; there are six offices (16ft. x 20ft.).? fitted with fireplaces and gas. The : offices are well lighted from margin : : lights, and plenty of ventilators ' installed. The'ceilings are of emborsed steel, and the walls are of heart of rlmu, beautifully varnished throughout. Sanitary conveniencesand a lavatory are also on the top floor. The two front offices have ,„ been secured by Messrs Collins and ■ Ohristensen, solicitors. - ' The corner shop on the ground;, floor which will be occupied by Mr : A. H. Mulinder, general storekeeper,.. is finished in a first-class manner, and "fitted with shelving, -drawers and binns, with three serving counters, 12ft. in length. There are three show windows —one 14ft. x Bffc 6in,, facing Broadway, and. two 10ft. ' by Bft. 6in. in High Street—of % plate glass, with -metal sheathed mouldings and silverite finish. The, green tiled fronts on the base form an attractive frontage. The timberused throughout" the building is of first-class quality, heart of matai being used in flooring and heart of rimu for shelving and ~ walls. This store is 54ft. by 24ft., and at the rear portion of the building a concrete cellar 12 x 12, has ,been bnilt, with egg vats, and it will also be used as' a cold storage cellar for butter, etc. The building has a circular corner verandah suspended with iron girders embedded their full width in the walls. The verandah- is divided into bays' wjih scotia cut into the angles, and the decking is covered with waterproof roofing. The shop facing Broadway is 58ft by 17ft., finished in the same firstclass style, and is eminently - suited. for any up-to-date business,- Th» walls are 14 feet high and vertically lined with tongued and * grooved, jointed lining of heart of rimu; The frontage is rough casted.-with; centre tiles, circular windows and. semi-circular parapets with circularparapets between the first floor arches.

The contractors, Messrs Haddoofc and Hassall, have spared no expense or trouble in carrying oat the work to the architect's instructions, the workmanship and material through-; out being excellent, and has no doubt giined the approval and congratulations of the architect, and the owners, Messrs Davenport Bros. The plumbing work was undertaken by Messrs Rees and Upchurch,' Marton, the ironwork by: Mr BenFarkes, and' the brick work tf Messrs Hunt Bros, and the first-claw style in which the building has been constructed speaks well for tb& artisans who took par!; in- the work.
