FIRE ON THE IMPERATOR.
TWO MEN BURNT TO DEATH. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received August 29, 2 p.m. New York, August 28, The liner Imperator, with a thousand steerage passengers, was the scene of a terrific fire near Hoboken Docks. The second officer and a seaman were cut off while fighting the flames, and perished. The Hoboken Fire Department poured tons of water into the holds, gradually overcoming the flames, but the vessel had a dangerous list before the outbreak was subdued. The passengers were awakened by the smoke, dashed terror-stricken ashore, but the officers managed to keep order and all escaped. The steamer’s interior was greatly damaged by the fire, which originated in the steerage.
