HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. Per Press Association. . Wellington, August 18. The following is the High Commissioner’s cable, dated .London, August 16th. Note: Quotations unless otherwise specified are average market prices on spot:— Meat —The market is dull, with very little business doing. Trade for all classes of mutton has been very slow, and prices are oarely maintained. Canterbury 4 3-16 d,. heavy weight unchanged, North Island 4^d. : There is dull sale for all lamb, Canterbury twos 6>£d, heavy weight fours unchanged, other than Canterbury s^d. Beef.—The market is steady with no change in prices. Chilled hinds sd, fores 2%d. Butter —The market is quiet. Dahish and Dutch is Is 3d owt. dearer, Australian Is 3d lower. Others are unchanged. Cheese—The market is very firm for New Zealand, the stock of which is almost exhausted New Zealand white 675, coloured 665, Canadian white 64s 6d to 665, coloured 65s to 665. Canadian make to date is 3000 tons less than last year. Canadian shipments are 5000 tons short. Wheat—The market is very quiet at last quotations. Oats—The market is firm" with more inquiry and fair demand for better grades “A” Gartons 23s 6d c. i.f. per 3301b5. Peas—The market is steady, with fair business doing. New Zealand Partridge peas per-5141b5, 445. Beans —The market is quiet. New Zealand f.a.q., new crop, per 5041 b, 375. Hemp—The market is quiet, but firm. New Zealand good fair grade £33, fair £2B, forward shipment about same price. Fair current Manila £3l 10s, forward shipments £33. The output from Manila for week was 13,000 bales. i Wool—The market is firm. It has not advanced, but there is general confidence in the maintenance of present prices. SOUTHERN GRAIN AND | PRODUCE. | i Oamaru, August 17. Not much business has been doing in wheat for the reason that little has been offering. There is a belief that only a small quantity of wheat and oats remains in growers’ hands. The net prices obtained at country stations were as follows: —Velvet 4s, red chaff 3s Bd, Tuscan 3s 6>£d. A number of small lots of oats have been sold. For A grade Gartons the figures are, net at country stations 2s Id and and for B grade 2s both net and subject to brokerage. Merchants, to complete orders for the north, advanced the price of potatoes from £2 12s 6d to £2 17s 6cl net on trucks, but these having been filled, the price went back to 50s oown to 455. There is no speculative business being done. STOCK REPORT. Freeman R. Jack son and Co. report;—At Wanganui on the 13 f h inst we yarded 500 mixed cattle, 3800 sheep and 50 pigs. The attendance was good and the bidding brisk throughout. Practically all the sheep and the balk of the cattle were sold at satisfactory prices. Pigs also sold at advanced rates Forward wethers 19s 6d, woolly hoggets 15s 6d to 16s, good shorn hoggets 15s 8d to 16s 2d, fair hoggets 34s 63 to 14s 9d, medium do. 12s lOd to 13s 6d, others 10s 6d to 11s'3d, empty ewes i 12s 6d, ewes in lamb 17s 6d, cull ewes 7s lOd, fat ewes good 21s 6d to ' 22s lid, medium fat ewes 18s to 20s, | heavy fat sheep, pets, Sis to 31s 6d, i prime fat wethers 25s 6d. Fat cows \ £7 to £7 10s, 3-year steers £6 to £6 ; 10s, 2M-year steers £5 ss, forward cows £3 15s to £4 os, store cows £3 : to £3 10s, mixed yearlings £2 16s, ■ weaners small 20s medium weaners 31s to 33a, yearling steers £2, 18months to 2-year empty dairy ' heifers £3 10s, dairy cows good £7 I 15s to £9, fair cows £6 to £7, ’ medium do. £4 to £5 10s, springing heifers £5. Pigs-: Small porkers 25s to 29s 6d, good porkers 45s to 48s 6d, medium do. 36s 6d to 395. Abraham & Williams report on | Feilding sale on Friday. We had a | fair yarding of both sheep and oattle. j Bidding for sheep was verykeen’and every pen sold under the hammer at prices in favour of the vendors. We , quote: 1 ewe hoggets 14s lOd, snjall ditto 12s, mixed hoggets 13s lid, I small wether hoggets 11s, small b.f. , hoggets 9s 7d, fat ewes 17s Oattle: ; weaner heifers 36s 6d to £2 2s 6d, 18 months heifers £3 13s, springing heifers £5 to £7, ditto cows £7 10s to £8 17s 6d,cows in calf £2 10s to £4 10s, store cows £3 10s to £3 15s, fat cows £6 12s 6d. I Loan & Mercantile report:—At Apiti on Tuesdaj we had a good yarding of both sheep and cattle, AH lines sold well at late rates. We quote: —2 tooth ewes, small 16s 7d, mixed age ewes 14s, forward wethers 19s, cull hoggets 8s Id, medium mixed hoggets 13s to 13s 6d, mixed hoggets good 14s lid, ewe hoggets 14s 3d to 14s 6d, empty cows £3 Is to £3 ss, small weaners 225, mixed yearlings £3 7s 6d, 3 year steers £3 19s 6d, cows in milk £5 5a to £6 10s, springing heifers £5 Is, empty cows £3 15s.
