ALLEGED CRIMINAL ASSAULT.

Per Press Association. Auckland, June 3G. A crowd about the front of the fish and refreshments shop of Mrs Callaghan, Karangah-ape Road, about halfpast twelve last 'night attracted the attention of 'Sergeant McDonald. He was informed cries for help and screams of ‘‘Murder!” had been heard in a woman's voice coming fromVthe place. He then himself heard the cries repeated, and made his way to the back of the place. The back door was bolted, but ho heard the cries continuing, and also tiie sound of a man’s voice. When he called out, the man, who gave his name as Charles Cunningham, came to the door. Mrs Callaghan also came to tne door and make allegations concerning the man’s conduct. Cunningham gsaid jthafe the woman was suffering from the effects of drink, and lie had locked up the place to see she was all right. After making further inquiries, the Sergeant arrested Cunningham, who gave his age as El years, and his vocation as general dealer.

At the Police Court to-day, on a charge of criminal assault, Cunningham was remanded by Mr Page, S. M., for a week. Bail was allowed in two sureties of £SO each.
