THE POSTAL SERVICE.

Slß,—Should you deem this note worthy of publication, I wis!* to rnake it clearly understood that / 1 have no fault to ficd with the local officers of the Post Offiea They have ever "aeen moat kind ami courteous tome, but thev have, like all Government officials, no power of initiative, and it would probably be as much as their posta are worth to point out a blunder to their superiors. By the Main Trunk I hie two mails arrive at Marton about midday, the second oue being from, the provincial and Dominion capital, with which most of us in these parts are more in touch than with Auckland. Between the times of arrival of these two mails tb.3 postman for thiß district is despatched on his rounds. Hence it happens that a ! letter posted in Auckland on Monday afternoon is delivered here on Tuesday, while a letter posted in Wellington at the same time is not delivered here until Y/ednesday. Our local M.P. is a neighbour of mine and must personally be a sufferer by this arrangement. May I ask him and you, who both promised us efficiency in Government service when Ward ism should be overthrown, "What has Auckland done for us (except give a figure head to the present Ministry) to be favoured thus at the expense of Welltngtou? Another point of transient interest but pointing a moral is this: The new mail boat Niagara leaves Auckland on Saturday. The Wellington papers announce officially that mails by Vancouver close in Wellington on Friday forenoon. Your paper announces also officially that the mail by Vancouver, close here on Thursday afternoon. What has Wellington done for the country that it should have an allowed it for mail purposes? Have we really got more efficient men at the head of affairs than before? With two exceptions. I doubt it.—l am etc., Vv\ BROWN. Upper Tutaeuui, May Bth. p. S.—Since writing the above I have seen your issue of to-day, m which it is announced that we are to have only three deliveries a week. And this alteration is made by a progressive Government, elected to ensure efficiency in management and to encourage settlement in country districts. By contrast it was recently announced that tho residents in the immediate neighbourhood of Marton are to have an extra afternoon delivery. W. B.
