Wellington, May 6, The annual conference of the executive of the Wellington District Hotel, Olno, and Restaurant Employees' Union opened at the Trades Hall to-day, umder the chairmanship of Mr J. Thornton, President of the Napier branch. After transacting formal business the conference adjourned to allow the secretaries and auditors to prepare the balance sheet for presentation to-morrow. THE SMITHPIELD SLAUGHTERMEN. • Timaru, May 6. Regarding the Smithfield botchers' strike, the only defiinte news is that more men have been taken on, and forty are" on the board to-day, and all other men are in their places. The trouble spread at Pareroa works, where the unionist butchers knocked off this afternoon, five men staying on. The s,s. Zealandia, which had lain in the roadstead some days, owing to the bad weather, came in this morning to load meat, and other produce. The. watersiders decided to turn to on " the general cargo® but it is understood they will hold a meeting to-morrow morning to decide whether to work her or not, after hearing from the secretary who went north with Mr P. O. Webb today. The striking butchers and watersiders invited the managers of the freezing works and shipping companies to a conference this morning, hut the managers declined. The Smithfield. manager said the time for a conference had gone by. The shipping men said that they had nothing -to confer about, and j did not want to be dragged into the [dispute. Both the freezing companies say , they will not take on again any of the butchers who have gone out, and will have no more to do with them. As regards loading the Zealandia, | exporters say they will find men if j the watersiders refuse to work, and j if they try to block the boat at other j ports they will rind men for these | also.
