IRON AND STEEL INDUSTRY.
The petition of F. W. Haybittle and others for legislation to encourage the production of iron and steel in New Zealand was reported upon yesterday by the Special Committee appointed by the House of Representatives. The Committee reported: (1) That it is desirable in the interests of this Dominion to encourage the production of iron and steel from the ores of this country; (2) that the proposals of the Ethelburga Syndicate as laid down in the draft Bill now before the committee appear to be unsatisfactory, and the committee does not recommend the acceptance of these proposals in their present form; (3) that the Government be recommended to make full enquiry into the question at as early, a date as possible, with the view of ascertaining the terms ott which investors are prepared to provide the necessary capital to velop the industry on an adequate scale; (4) further, as an alternative, that the Government should fully inquire into the advisability of developing the industry as a State enterprise; (s)‘ that the Government should insist on the terms of the Parapara and Onekaka leases being complied with. Without disoflssion, the House referred the report to" the Government for consideration.
