FIRES.

Per Press Association. Christchurch, October 15. A fire at Raugiora this morning destroyed a shop and dwelling owned by Mrs G. Dale and occupied by G. McAulilTe, undertaker, and also an adjoining dwelling owned by R. Kinley. Mrs Dale’s buildings were insured for £BOO in the Northern office, and Kinley’s bouse for £3OO and the contents for £IOO in the Liverpool, London and Globe. Auckland. October 15.

A tire on the top floor of Palmerston buildings, in Queen street, about 1 o’clock this morning was confined to what is known as “the artists’flat, ’’ which, excepting one studio, was completely gutted. The studios destroyed were those of Moore, Jones, Armiu Schmitt, C. Kingsley Smith, F. Langmuir, M. Levy, H. Derere Percy, Misses Kit Turner and Vera Jocohsen. The loss in pictures alone is estimated at £IOOO. There was considerable damage from water in the premises in the lower portion of the buildings. Almost every office in the buildings suffered. The lire was extinguished 40 minuttes after its outbreak. The caretaker’s wife retired at 11 p. m., and later heard ‘an unusual noise. She found the studio occupied by Miss Turner ablaze and gave the alarm. The insurances are: —Palmerston buildings (top flat gutted) £17,000 in the Guardian; English and Foriegn Piano Co., stock badly damaged by water £7600 in United; Woolridge and Baughau £BSO in Atlas, a total loss; Schmitt £3OO in Atlas, a total loss. New Plymouth, October 15. A six-roomed" house, owned -by Mrs Bramiey and occupied by Mr Grut, an officer in the Public Works Department, was gutted by fire Just night. It was insured for £325 in the United, and the furniture, for £175 in the State. This will not cover the loss. The cause is unknown. The family were away at the theatre when the fire broke out.

A seven-roomed house situated in Phasayn street, Feildiug, owned and occupied by Mr A. H. McGuire, was destroyed by tire at 6 o’clock this morning, nothing being saved. It is supposed that the outbreak was caused by a primus. stove igniting some clothes. The building, which was erected four years ago, cost £750 and was insured for £550, and the furniture for £395. A two-roomed whare at Kaimatarau, Eongotea, was destroyed I y lire last night. The whare was owned and occupied by Mr Joe Marson, who was unable to save anything. His mate also lost a military kit.
