. THE CAULFIELD MEETING. FIRST DAY. Sydney, October 13. For the Caulfield meeting there was bright sunshine, which was a bit on the warm side. A large crowd was attracted to Caulfield to participate in the opening of Melbourne’s spring campaign. There is no doubt the Amateur Club suffers through clashing' with Sydney, which attracts Victoria’s best horses as well as New Zealanders by the big weight-for-age stakes. Caulfield entries fell from 542 to 454, while Sydney entries increased from 876 to 1030. Several Sydney trainers missed nominations for Flemington, as well as Caulfield, in consequence of the clashing. Lady Medallist was the only Sydney horse performing in to-day’s weight-for-age races. However, the programme to-day had little or no effect on the attendance. Both -clubs will find the extra stand accommodation too ! little to seat the crowds at this year’s fixture, which promises (partly owing to the influx of immigrants) to be the biggest spring carnival in the history of Victoria. The Governor-General and Sir John Fuller and suites were present. Results:— lola Handicap.—Kwasind 1, Martyre 2, Sharpshooter 3. Twentytwo started. Won by half a length. Time, Imin 30sec. Bronze, Vice-Admiral, Theodore, Midnight Sun, Ermengarde, Allegory, Canute, Peirene, Adelicia and Gerberger are aboard the Moeraki, which sailed at 7 p.m. yesterday. The Telegraph says that New Zealand trainers are agreed that New Zealand form is not as high as Australian, though they are inclined to think it was when they 'started what has proved financially a disastrous trip. Sydney, October 14. The horses Sir Lethe and Reumac have also been shipped to New Zealand. The Telegraph says that judging from Randwiek, New Zealand horses have deteriorated. If we are to .have their support, and it is desirable, it is necessary to rate the standard of the best New Zealand gallopers some pounds below the standard here.
