LABOUR TROUBLES.

A meeting of Auckland citizens was held to-day to consider what further assistance should be given to the Waihi engine-drivers who have been thrown out of employment by the strike. Those present were very enthusiastic, and all the speakers were unanimous in their resolution to guarantee funds for the enginedrivers till the termination of the trouble. Since the fund has been inaugurated the men out of work hare each benefited to the extent of £3 per week, and the number now requiring relief is between thirty and forty. , . Christchurch, July 23.

In the enginedrlvers* dispute the following agreement has been arrived at before the Council of Conciliationß4 hours’ per week, overtime at the rate of time and a quarter, time taken in getting up steam to be paid for at ordinary rates; work done on New Year’s Day, Easter Monday, Labour Day. and the King’s Birthday to be paffi for at the rate of time and a half; work done on Christmas Day, Good Friday, and Sundays, to be paid for at double rates. In the case of factories, the drivers of engines to ba entitled to holidays given by any award or industrial agreement affecting the factory, or in cases where there is no award or industrial agreement affecting same, to any holiday generally observed in the factory whereby the same ceases to work; for work done on saoh holidays the rate of overtime to be time and a half; morning and evening newspapaas to be exempted from the holiday danse; preference and underrate workers’ clauses; youths employed as firemen to be paid the following f rates :--18 and-under 19 years of age, per hour; 19 and under 20 years of age, 9d per hour: where the work that the enginedriver is employed to do requires that he shall hold a first class certificate as a stationary enginedriver and he is the holder of a first-class certificate, Is B%d ; regarding other classes of engine-drivers, the employers’ assessors stated they were not prepared to agree to any advance on the present award rates, and after considerable discussion the Union’s assessors agreed. Wanganui, July 93. A meeting of delegates of the Now Zealand Federation of ’Waterside Workers mot in Wanganui to-day to consider steps for strengthening the Federation. Theyo wefie present: Messrs Burrows and McCarthy, representing Naplpr and Gisborne; Hayward. Bluff; Smith, Wellington; also the following members of the 'Executive: —Messrs Seal, Callaghan, Donnell, White. Mandono and G. MoKsy. The secretary's report regretted that out of .twelve unions existing a year ago, only four—Napier, Bluff, Gisborne ■-and Wanganui—now remained loyal to the Federation. The rest have gone over to the Federation of Labour. Mr J. P.osd, President of the N.Z.W.W.F., wrote frem Lyttelton regretting the torn events had taken, and warning other Federations of Unions from being' split ap by the Federation of Labour, which was making bnt little progress in the right direction, and only .dividing the house against itself. The New Zealand Workers Waterside Conference this morning received a telegram from Greymouth Unions, to the effect that they have withdrawn from the Federation of Labour and are rejoining the Watassidera’ Federation.
