A SHOCKING FATALITY.

Christchurch, July 31.

A shocking fatality occarrrecl at the boiler shop of the Lyttelton Foundry of Messrs Andersens, Ltd., about io o’clock this morning, a maohinst named; Charles Manschamp being caught ia the main shafting, whirled round, and killed instantaneously, Ills body being fearfully mutilated. Mansohsnap was engaged in mending a broken belt which had been running on a pulley on the main shaft. After putting the f siauinga on the broken ends of the belt he mounted ‘a ladder which was resting on a bracket below the shaft, and pushed one end of the belt and the other ande* the? shaft, which was revolving between his arms. There waa only one actual eye-witness of the accident, a youth named Sydney-James. He stated that the whole thing happened in an instant, and that while Mansohamp waa reaching over the shaft about 13 feet above the ground part of bis clothing- became entangled with a key on the shaft, which was running a 108 revolutions per minute Mansohamp waa torn from the ladder and carried over the shaft, and whirled round several times. Tho engines were stepped at once and Manschasap was taken down. Death must have been instantaneous, for hia head was badly crushed, bosh legs were completely severed b low the knees, and both arms were broken, and the chest badly bruised. Deceased waa a married mao, asHi leaves a widow and two young ctnldrob. He was about 35 years of aga, and |hacl been employed by Messrs Anderson, Ltd. for about 57 years At the inquest, Fred Wa Anderson, director of Andersens, Ltd., stated that deceased was a careful, steady, efficient and industrious man. He was an expert man at belting, and had done similar work thousands of times. After hearing the evidence, she Coroner recorded a verdict of “Aocidesstellv killed.”
