RANGITIKEI A. & P. ASSOCIATION.

FIRST WINTER SHOW

A FINE EXHIBITION. No matter what Taihape takes in band it is always carried out with enthusiasm and thoroughness so that the result is a foregone conclusion. Members of the A. & F. Association who played a prominent parent yesterday’s first winter show are to be congratulated on the marked sncoesa of their initial nndertaking. The secretary, Mr H. J. Jaggard, ofiioialii and exhibitors alike rose to the occasion right worthily. It was a phew that attracted large entries and the quality was there. The farm products wera'an outstandiag'featnre and would .easily have made an attractive exhibition for a metropolitan fixture. The green top turnips could not be beaten by Button's best in England—at least this was the judge's candid opinion, and the writer concurred. They were grown by Mr R. T. Batley, Moawhaugo, and were perfect specimens in shape, size and quality. There was a very fine display of potatoes. Some of the exhibits were of enormous size and the quality was there also. The garden roots were of exceptional merit right through and there is no question that big roots can be grown in the Taihape district, and what is of more importance than the size, is and shapeliness. Mr Q. Ellis, Bulls, judged the field root section and the garden exhibits we’B judged by Mr Rasmussen, Wanganui. Mr J. Walker, the poultry judge, made an interesting exhibition of bantams and fauoy pigeons, which won over 50 prizes and two challenge cups at the recent show held at Hastings, They comprised, the North Island champion duck wing game cockerel and silver seabright cockerel, also a magnificent roseoomb cockerel—one of the finest birds seen out this season. His exhibition of pile §ad black red game, silver seabrights, black Pekins, (imported from England), and various classes in pigeons was a centre of attraction. Mr Walker Is one of the North Island Poultry Assooiatioa’sspproved judges for all classes of poultry and pigeons. He was highly pleased and agreeably surprised with the all round excellence of the exhibits—notably tbeWhite Wyandottes, Black Orpingtons, barred Plymouth Rocks, and Indian Runner ducks. There were some grand birds shown in each class which made quite a feature of the show. The bantams exhibited were few in quantity, bat excellent in quality. The be?fe bird in the show was a typical White Wyandotte cockerel exhibited by Me J. McKenzie, in perfect competition and a specimen of the type hard to beat. The runner-up for the championship—a Black OipingSon henentered by Mr W. T. Hicks, Wanganui, was a beautifully shaped and grandly coloured bird and ran the winner closely on points. Mr McKenzie gets the option of taking a gold medal, won outright, or a silver medal, and one leg in for a silver cup Mr McKenzie’s entry which gained first honours, for White Wyandotte hen was a real good bird, but waa closely pressed by the second prize-winner exhibited by Mrs Darvill (Taihape). This was also a bird of typical type of the breed and exhibited in splend ,f l condition.
